This Saturday, members of Transition King’s Lynn set to work on the edible garden – clearing weeds, digging in green manures, sowing seeds and planting out seedlings.

If you are passing the garden in the Walks and spot a flower that needs deadheading, a weed that needs pulling up or any other job that needs doing, don’t hesitate to get stuck in! TKL want to emphasise that this is a community garden, and we encourage everyone to get involved, whatever their age, ability or experience!

Tuesday 29th June – 7.30m at Nourish Cafe, London Road – TKL Annual General Meeting. Bring food to share.

This month also sees the launch of the Transition King’s Lynn Zero Waste Group. The motto of this group will be “Make Friends Not Waste!”. KLWIN’s website is up and running – check it out at http://www.klwin.org/. Their first public meeting will be held at the NORA Offices, near the Southgates Roundabout on Tuesday 1st June at 7.30pm.

Stop Press! – Prof Paul Corbett to talk in King’s Lynn – Friday 14th May

A last minute cancellation in his speaker dates has meant that Prof Paul Connett, one of the world’s leading experts in waste management, is coming to Kings Lynn tomorrow (Friday 14th May) to give a talk regarding the incinerator which is planned for Kings Lynn, and Zero Waste which is a viable, sustainable alternative.

Dr. Paul Connett is a graduate of Cambridge University and holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College. Since 1983 he taught chemistry at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY where he specialised in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. He retired in May 2006. Over the past 25 years his research on waste management has taken him to 49 states in the US, and 52 other countries, where he has given over 2000 pro bono public presentations. Ralph Nader said of Paul Connett, “He is the only person I know who can make waste interesting.”

The talk is free and open to everyone, it is hoped that some of those councillors who are proposing and supporting the incinerator will make themselves available to attend the talk. It will be at the NORA offices 6:30pm for a 7pm start, til 9pm Friday 14th May. The NORA offices are on the South Gate roundabout. There is a small car park on site.

Local Families work on the Edible Garden

The Edible Garden in the Walks is springing to life and this week several families from a local group of home educators met to work on the bed. Leeks and carrots were harvested; weeds were pulled out; seeds were sown; strawberries were planted and a fun time was had by all:

Saturday 12 June 10:30-midday. Planting and seed sowing. Plants, seeds, tools and gloves provided or bring your own.

Saturday 3 July 10:30-midday. Weeding, including herb and flower identification. Tools, gloves and i.d. resources provided or bring your own.

Saturday 7 August 10:30-midday. Planting and seed sowing.

Saturday 4 September 10:30-midday. Harvesting.

Just turn up and join in, for more information please ask Jonathan at Nourish Cafe, or contact us via the website.

Produce from the bed is available for anyone to harvest and eat themselves – if you are unsure about anything please ask.

If you are in the area and fancy a spot of gardening please feel free to do anything you see needs doing on the bed – weeding, watering, dead-heading, harvesting etc. We would love for more people to join in. It’s your garden, no need to ask!

Concerns about Local Incinerator Plans

TKL are getting behind a campaign to oppose plans to build a waste incinerator plant in our town.

At the bottom of this post are a couple of videos that highlight some of the health concerns about these plants.

The incineration of household waste:

The alternatives to incineration are cheaper, more flexible, quicker to implement and better for the environment. Rather than incinerating waste, local authorities should focus on maximising recycling and providing a weekly separate food waste collection for treatment by composting or anaerobic digestion (AD). Recyclables and biodegradables should be separated from the small amount of residue material. This residue should be stabilised by composting and then sent to landfill.

Tree Pruning Workshop – Saturday 13th March

Come along to a Formative Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop on Saturday 13th March from 10:30am-midday.

We will be pruning the two dozen fruit trees and bushes that were planted last December in the edible bed in The Walks.

If you would like to try your hand at pruning fruit or have questions about it, we would love to see you.

It’s also an opportunity for a tidy up of the bed, getting it ready for sowing seeds this spring.

News from Transition King’s Lynn

It was decided at this week’s general TKL meeting that we would no longer hold monthly meetings as they are doing little to help the group make progress, and that TKL was in very real danger of “death by meeting”. Instead, we will hold a regular programme of events and social get togethers, when TKL ideas can be discussed and expanded on, whilst we get on with other practical stuff. So here are some dates for your diary:

Sunday 28th February 10.30 – 12 Edible Garden, The Walks – General pre-season tidy up session – weeding, clearing up, preparing ground. Bring tools and flasks!

Sunday 21st March – TBC – visit to local sustainable project near King’s Lynn

Thursday 22nd April – TKL Away Day to North Norfolk Coast Earth Day Sustainability Exhibition in Burnham Deepdale. BOOK A DAY OFF WORK NOW!!!! And join us as we catch the Coasthopper bus to Burnham Deepdale for this exhibition. You can read more about the exhibition here and see what TKL said about last year’s event here

Meeting dates for Transition King’s Lynn in 2010 will be the first Tuesday of each month. Meetings are held at Nourish Cafe on London Road and start at 7.30pm. The first few meeting dates for 2010 are therefore:
