News from Transition King’s Lynn Friday, Feb 5 2010

It was decided at this week’s general TKL meeting that we would no longer hold monthly meetings as they are doing little to help the group make progress, and that TKL was in very real danger of “death by meeting”.  Instead, we will hold a regular programme of events and social get togethers, when TKL ideas can be discussed and expanded on, whilst we get on with other practical stuff.  So here are some dates for your diary:

Sunday 28th February 10.30 – 12 Edible Garden, The Walks – General pre-season tidy up session – weeding, clearing up, preparing ground.  Bring tools and flasks!

Sunday 21st March – TBC – visit to local sustainable project near King’s Lynn

Thursday 22nd April – TKL Away Day to North Norfolk Coast Earth Day Sustainability Exhibition in Burnham Deepdale.  BOOK A DAY OFF WORK NOW!!!! And join us as we catch the Coasthopper bus to Burnham Deepdale for this exhibition.  You can read more about the exhibition here and see what TKL said about last year’s event here

Without the monthly meetings,it is more important than ever that we all stay connected to what’s going on with TKL and there are a number of ways of doing this:

  • Email Mailing List – Please use the contact form to let TKL know if you would like to be added to the mailing list.
  • Join the TKL and Friends Yahoo Group here:

    Click to join transitionkingslynnandfriends

  • Keep up to date with posts on the Transition King’s Lynn website.  Click on the “Sign Me Up” button on the left hand side to receive email updates whenever there is a new post.

So with all these ways to stay in touch, there’s no excuses!

Edible Garden Update Tuesday, Nov 10 2009

Well, the main growing season is now over and Transitioners met at the plot on Sunday 8th November to tidy up and clear away in readiness for planting fruit trees and bushes at the end of the month.  Whilst most crops were finished, it was great to see the Swiss chard still looking resplendent:

Zero Carbon Caravan coming to King’s Lynn Thursday, Sep 3 2009

On Monday 14th September, the Zero Carbon Caravan will be coming through King’s Lynn:

The Zero Carbon Caravan (ZCC) will generate a mass movement of individuals and organisations to carry the message of action on climate change to the UNFCCC talks in Copenhagen (2009).

We are making our way to Copenhagen without using fossil fuel transportation. Along the route we’ll connect with local groups to establish an itinerary of ‘zero carbon conferences’ to build momentum for zero carbon awareness.

The ZCC will act as a coordinating hub for other ‘caravanning’ groups, encouraging worldwide participation to demand of the UNFCCC our mission: ‘A zero carbon world, as fast as we can’.

Find out more about the Zero Carbon Caravan here

Members of TKL will be joining the caravanners en route from Downham Market, picking up other cyclists along the route at Watlington and within King’s Lynn culminating in a picnic to be held at the Walks.  An evening event will be held at the Green Quay from 7-9pm, where the zero carbon caravan members will be talking about their journey from Wales through to Copenhagen and talking to residents of King’s Lynn about their own efforts in working towards a zero carbon future.

It will be a great evening, so please join us!

If you would like to join in with cycling alongside the Zero Carbon Caravan on Monday 14th, please contact us via the contact page or email transition.kingslynn [at] googlemail.com.

Transition Garden Produce Giveaway Thursday, Aug 13 2009

On Saturday 8th August, members of Transition King’s Lynn set up a stall in the Walks to give away some of the produce from the bed.  The feedback from this was very positive, though some people were suspicious as to why we were giving it away for free, and others simply couldn’t bring themselves to take it for free, so gave donations (gratefully received!)  Other surplus produce has been donated to a local homeless charity to be used by the cooks in their day centres.
